If the smiling faces of 182 young sailors are anything to go by, then the 44th Sabot Australian Championships and Judy & Karl Evans Sabot Week Regatta held recently at Vaucluse should be deemed a huge success.

The event attracted teams from Queensland, NSW, Victoria and Tasmania, which competed on a glittering Sydney Harbour over the New Year. Amazing weather and reasonable winds provided the sailors, aged eight to 16, with great opportunities to test their skills.

Regatta director Paula Reilly said competition on the water was fierce. 'With the exception of the junior championship all the places were decided in the final race, making for an exciting finale,' Paula said. 'The three teams’ trophies were won by three different zones.'

In the Judy & Karl Evans Sabot Week Regatta the first six in the series scratch results were:
1. Aleksandrs Price (Oceanic, Tasmania), 2. Kimberley White (Rapid Fire, Southern Queensland), 3. Tom Duhig (The Edge, SQ), 4. Eliza Kluckow, (Evolution, Southern NSW), 5. Kaela Sparre (Blue Peter, SNSW), 6. Ali Blundell (Jindavik V, SQ).

Junior top 6:
1 . Louis and Chester Collins (Explosion, SNSW), 2. Zane Comadira and Harrison White (Fire V, SQ), 3. Tom Collins and Chriso Dixson (What Ever Floats Your Boat, SNSW), 4. Declan Curtin and Nicole Erwin (Spider, SNSW), 5. Billy Lusty and Jerremy Jones (Gotta ‘B’, SNSW), 6. Ned Carter and Conrad Sayer (Waterholic, SNSW).

In the 44th Sabot Australian Championships the first six in the series scratch results were:
1. George Davies (Synergy, Victoria), 2. Matt Graham (Back in Black, Northern NSW), 3. Sean Ott (Guided Missile, SQ), 4. Shelley White (Staytuned, SQ), 5. Jeremy O’Connell (Blitz, Vic), 6. Declan Rohr (Firebolt, SNSW).

Junior top 6:
1. Kurt Hansen and Matthew Lang (Need for Speed, NNSW), 2. Vardon Robson and Lindsay Pike (Thunderstruck, NNSW), 3. James McLennan and Max Nichols (Way to Go, Vic), 4. Lachlan Robba and Trevor Koreman (Mydas Touch II, SQ), 5. Sophie McIntosh and Danielle Hughes (Predator, NNSW), 6. Bradley Leicester and Codie Caldecoat (Afterburn, NNSW).

The Northern Queensland zone will host the 2008/09 event at Airlie Beach in the Whitsundays.
