Mainship launches new 45 Trawler

Mainship’s 45 Trawler, which is replacing the Mainship 43 Trawler, brings to market an extra spacious salon and flybridge with enhanced features that provide the interior layout demanded and desired by cruising couples.
A combination of both customer and dealer feedback was tapped in the design and development of this updated model.
'A large percentage of Mainship customers are cruising couples, and many told us they wanted a 45-foot model that had a second stateroom for guest, with a separate head,' said Mainship’s Vice President Jim Krueger. 'By adding a true guest suite with a second head, there is now more privacy for occasional company onboard and guests no longer have to use the owner’s private head.'
The original Mainship 43 Trawler offered a mid cabin study that doubled as a guest stateroom and shared a single head with access from both the companionway and the master suite.
The mid-cabin of the new Mainship Pilot 45 now features a starboard guest stateroom, double berth with storage, hanging locker and a private en-suite head with shower.
The 45’s expansive salon maintains its open airy feel with the large panoramic windows. The single helm chair has been changed to a doublewide bench seat that allows the cruising couple to both enjoy the same commanding view while underway operating from the lower helm. The helm is situated to starboard with an easy-access sliding entry door.
A fully outfitted galley is positioned forward and includes a microwave oven, Corian® countertops, electric three-burner range oven with ventilation hood, oversized double sink with designer faucet, two freezer and two refrigerator pull-out drawers.
Much-needed galley storage is provided by a multi-shelf pantry, dish and cup locker, and in-sole storage under the durable Everwear® flooring. A Corian®-topped bar is perfect for casual meals and includes upholstered bar stools.
The expansive master stateroom remains virtually unchanged from the Mainship 43 Trawler with all the extra space required for extended cruisers or liveaboards. The master stateroom includes a queen-size island berth with
innerspring mattress and under-berth storage drawers; a sizable built-in Ultraleather® cushioned sitting area; and an innovative, cedar-lined double closet with drawers.
High-intensity adjustable reading lights and twin screened opening port lights offer plenty of onboard brightness. Teak slats are used on the stateroom’s interior hull sides and provide a vintage nautical flair.
Entry to the private head is accessed only from the master stateroom. All the conveniences of home are included such as a built-in linen locker; vanity with Corian® top and sink; tub and shower with enclosure; and QuietFlush® toilet with holding tank.
Mainship’s customer surveys also revealed a desire for extended range and faster cruising speeds, so the 45’ Trawler engineers responded to meet this desire by delivering a large 777-gallon fuel capacity – whopping 300-gallons more than most competitors in its class.
Power options now range from twin 440 hp up to hefty 540 hp electronic diesels. The 45’ also boasts the largest and best engine room in the fleet.
'The cruising range of the 45’ Trawler is really outstanding, especially when combined with the standard, fuel-efficient twin 440 diesels engines and our semi-displacement hull,' said Krueger. 'Even those who want more power with the twin 540s will have great range because of the large fuel capacity.'
The Mainship 45’ Trawler’s expansive flybridge has a fully instrumented helm with deluxe captain’s chair and two swivelling passenger helm chairs. An L-shaped settee surrounds a table, and cushioned seating is provided for six adults when combined with adjacent moulded bench seating.
A summer galley, ice maker, flybridge, stereo and canvas package are popular options that enhance the entertainment and outdoor dining experience.

Helen Hopcroft of Powerboat-World wrote about Mainship’s a couple of months ago. Her article provides a background on this rather special product range.
‘A small revolution is happening on our inland and coastal waters. It’s not an obvious or overnight change, just something that is happening in small steps rather than leaps and bounds. Like many shifts in public taste, it occurs so gradually that many people remain unaware that it is happening until suddenly the new thing has become part of the mainstream.
In America the taste for ‘Down East’ style vessels has become an established part of the local boating scene. It started when a few enterprising boat builders realised that there was a small but growing nostalgia for the older displacement trawler and sturdy lobster boat style hulls. They took the old designs and reworked them into pleasure cruisers, capturing the imagination of the retiring ‘Baby Boomers’ and sparking a world wide interest in these types.
The American boat builder Mainship quickly became a giant in this area and is now one of the world’s largest producers of recreational trawlers in the world.
Their trawlers and pilot boats have gained a reputation as very comfortable liveaboards, with the trawlers in particular often chosen as long distance cruising vessels because of their handling and fuel economy.
Chris and Wally Szewczuk, owners of Auspicious Yacht Sales and the sole importers of Mainships into Australia, said that the company’s growth had been phenomenal with agencies popping up all over the globe.
‘These boats are the classic, real deal American trawler and pilot boat’ explained Chris.
‘They’re huge in Europe: the Düsseldorf boat show is one of their biggest international shows. They’re in Dubai and China, they’re everywhere. They’ve even got someone in Russia and the Ukraine.’
Chis commented that there were many reasons for Mainships international success and it wasn’t just nostalgia for the look of the traditional working boats.
She observes, and this is a view backed up by Mainship’s own research, a demographic shift in tastes with many boat owners turning away from the ‘Miami Vice’ style of vessel in favour of a more classic type. They are choosing elegance over modernity, fuel economy over speed, and comfort over glitz.
‘Many Mainship owners are from a yachting background…They’re at a point in their life where they’re comfortable, they’re probably retired or they’re semi retired, and speed isn’t really what they’re after. They’re after enjoying the trip, not just the destination.’
‘They have the time to spare, so they like the leisurely trip of the boat. They like to feel that they’re being more traditional than just flying around in a white plastic thing.’
