BOAT OF THE DAY - TEAM SHOCKWAVE (Neville Crichton) in Farr 40 Nationals
by Georgie Brown on 9 Nov 2001
Day 2 of the Farr 40 OD National Championships produced beautiful sailing for the first two races in a light swell and a steady 12-15knot Nor Easter. The third race of the day was marred
by a rain squall which turned the wind around from Nor Easters to South East, resulting in a slight delay as the course was changed
The Farr 40 OD National Championships are being hosted by The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Squadron. Racing is conducted offshore on the Palm Beach circle,
The first race of the day saw Emotional Hooligan (Marcus Blackmore) first off the pin, but a tack seawards allowed Buon Giorno (Stephen Ellis) to take advantage of the left hand shift.
Buon Giorno led the way around the top marks of the windward leeward course followed approximately 10 seconds later by Emotional Hooligan and Team Shockwave (Neville Crichton).
The two old mates were locked in a titan battle at close quarters as Hooligan slipped under Shockwave at the first mark before a slick twist of the wheel saw Crichton gain a brief moment of glory at the offset mark.
As the fleet headed downwind towards the finish line, War Games (David Urry), Envy (Tony Dickson) and Smile (Simon Whiston) headed east in search of the
breeze, a manouvre which failed to pay off. Buon Giorno took the race followed by Team Shockwave and Emotional Hooligan
Team Shockwave suffered a set back with a restart after being On the Course Side (OCS)
He made up ground coming in a creditable fifth on a surge over Envy. Corinthian Doors (Richard Perini) led the way followed by a close group of Buon Giorno, Hooligan and Weapon.
A symmetrical line of Farr 40's foxtrotted behind until the final two when an aggressive Shockwave slipped past Leroy Brown on a surge of water.
After a general recall in the third race, Shockwave crossed the line well ahead of a spread out fleet. It was a testing course as the winds shifted from the east, to the south east, to the
north east. Crews worked hard trimming and hoisting the kites. Second over the line was Brighton Star with the fleet well spread out behind. Third was Corinthian Doors
Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club's Race Administrator Denis Thompson said, 'The squall today mixed up the results, but overall the racing has been very tight. In five races, we have seen
four different winners.
'We are now half way through the regatta and anyone could win', he said.
