Our Pro, where did you go?

Dave Brennan at the helm of Pipe Dream IX at the King’s Cup in Phuket, Thailand Lynn Fitzpatrick
There are over 100 yachts of all different shapes and sizes registered in the 21st Annual King’s Cup in Phuket, Thailand. The King’s Cup is organized under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club in Conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket. The King’s Cup is celebrated in conjunction with His Royal Majesty the King of Thailand’s Birthday.

Other royalty is gracing Phuket and the waters of the Adaman Sea. Some are recognized by their attire and their entourages. However, one needs no introduction, if you are a sailor from the States. King of the PRO’s, Dave Brennan is here!

The last time many of us saw or heard from Dave Brennan, unless we’re among his closet friends, family and loyal race committee legions, was at Block Island Race Week. Dave and his wife, Kendra have been quietly and peacefully cruising the Mediterranean, the coast of Africa and Asia for the past five months. They led the show at Storm Trysail’s Block Island Race Week and then took flight to their home away from home, Scott Piper’s J/160, Pipe Dream IX.

As the racing season is heating up in Miami, Dave and Kendra are not the only South East Floridians and stalwart regatta organizers who are on the other side of the globe sailing odd shaped distance races in which islands such as Ko Kaeo Noi, Ko Kaeo Yai, Ko Hi and Ko Aeo are used as gates. Cindy Saunders who is usually on the bow of Biscayne Bay’s Race Committees’ Boats raising flags, sounding signals and taking down bow numbers is also here enjoying the island’s resorts, entertainment, cuisine and spectacular sailing.

Don’t worry, after traveling to Bangkok and Hong Kong for a few days, Dave, Kendra and Cindy will return to Miami with plenty of time to spare so that they can help to put on yet some other great shows - the Etchells Jaguar Series regattas the Accura Key West Race Week. You never know, they may even return with some Asian tested ideas for setting courses, running races and planning après sailing parties.
