The Monsoon Cup 2007 kicked off yesterday with a parade of the competing teams through the streets of Kuala Terengganu, the ceremonial arrival of the Monsoon Cup and the World Match Racing Trophy at the Heritage Bay Club, Pulau Duyong, an Opening Ceremony officiated by His Royal Highness Yang Dipertuan Agong Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, King of Malaysia, and the first two flights of the 17-flight round robin series.
After all the ceremonial events, racing got under way in 5-10 kts of breeze on the purpose-built 'sailing arena' in front of the Heritage Bay Club at Pulau Duyong.
Ian Williams (GBR) had a 'slow start' to the series, being defeated twice in two races, and Torvar Mirsky (AUS) was the surprise opener with two wins from two starts.
Ceremonials continued in the evening with a State Dinner attended by the King of Malaysia and the Sultan of Selangor.
