Florida State Snipe Championships

Saint Petersburg Yacht Club hosted the Snipe class State Championships November 17th and 18th. As often happens at this time of year, absent a cold front, the winds were light but steady in direction. Only four races were sailed and the Augie Diaz and Michelle sniffed out the pressure better than the rest.

The depth of great sailors in Snipe District 7, which encompasses the south-eastern United States, is never in question. For the past several years, the district has been home to National, North American, Western Hemisphere and World Champion Snipe Sailors. Some of those sailors have won major championships in Lightnings, Windmills, Stars and Optimists; that doesn't even take into account Ethan Bixby's recent big boat campaigns. Many of those sailors hail from the Miami Snipe Fleet. This year alone sailors from the fleet laid claim to the US Championship, North American Championship and World Championship - and they were won by different individuals. You can imagine that the annual Florida State Snipe Championship is a very competitive regatta.

Saint Petersburg Yacht Club hosted the Snipe class State Championships November 17th and 18th. Some of the local talent was missing, probably preoccupied with other upcoming regattas or perhaps looked at the weather forecast and decided to opt out.

In any case, North American Snipe Champion, Augie Diaz steered his way to yet another Florida State Snipe Championship, this time with Michelle Sumpton in the bow. The Diaz, Voss, Bixby, Klotz, Park, Jeffers, Lynde and Kroetsch families were well represented with husbands and wives and siblings sailing together and against one another. There were three Diaz skippers. The top husband and wife team - Chris and Antoinette Klotz. The top junior team - siblings Nick and Kara Voss.
