Perfect Start for Blue Water Round World Rally

The 34 yachts of the Blue Water Round the World Cruising Rally 2007-9 enjoyed perfect conditions for the first leg of their voyage from Gibraltar to Lanzarote. Strong north-easterly winds and a good sea state meant fast passages and for the last two weeks yachts have been safely berthed at Puerto Calero Marina in the southeast of the island.

The Blue Water Rally 2007-9 is the seventh cruising rally around the world by the same organisers and has attracted entries from 10 nations.

The event is cruising - only (there is no handicapping) and independent cruising is actively encouraged as the Rally sails for 20 months along the equatorial route through some of the most beautiful cruising areas of the world, including the islands of the South Pacific, Indonesia and Phuket where Christmas will be celebrated in 2008.

The event is also family-friendly and several children are sailing in the fleet whose yachts range from 35 to 60 feet loa.

The organisers have announced two new ports of call for this Rally Puert Calero in Lanzarote in the Canary Islands and Mackay Marina in Queensland, Australia. They believe that Mackay will be a particularly popular stopover, both for a halfway refit and for visiting the Whitsunday Islands on the way north towards Cairns and Darwin.

By 17 November Blue Water Rally yachts had already started to leave Lanzarote en route to Antigua, where they will spend Christmas in the warm waters of the Caribbean.
