Yale wins the Women's Atlantic Coast Championships

by Regatta Organizers, edited by Lynn Fitzpatrick on 15 Nov 2007
SW
The Yale Sailing Team did their best to adjust to a shifty northerly that kept backing to the West throughout weekend. The eighteen teams competing in the ICSA Women's Atlantic Coast Championships sailed flat water for most of the races, but there were times in the afternoons when the winds were more westerly than northerly and were accompanied by a bit of a chop. The race committee abandoned two races due to extremely large shifts and unstable wind conditions.

Each division sailed nine races in the 420's, rather than a full round robin. Rule 42 was enforced several times during the weekend by judges Emily Hill, Clay Johnson, Matt Barry and Meredith Killion who are certainly qualified to know the subtleties of using kinetics to propel small dinghies.

The magic number was 38 this weekend. Each division was won with 38 points. With the home team advantage, Yale's B Division team of Kate Hagemann and Liz Brim, shared low point honors for the regatta with Tufts' A Division. Without ever winning a race, but nabbing several second place finishes Hagemann and Brim had 38 points. Their teammates, Jane Mackey and Marla Menninger, were second in A Division with 47 points. Tufts' Kaity Storck and Lindsey Gibbons-Neff won A Division with four bullets and a few races in the middle third of the fleet; a clear indication of how fluky the conditions were.

Saturday: We began sailing at the mouth of the cove in 10-15 knot winds and a shifty Northerly. As the day progressed, the wind moderated to five to eight knots and shifted towards the west. 18 teams participated. One protest filed, resulting in one DSQ.

Sunday: The wind was consistently unstable. The breeze shifted from North to West and back to the North-West as the day went on. The velocity ranged from three to 12 knots with large puffs and lulls and quick oscillations throughout the course. The water was flat in the Northerly races with slight chop when it shifted to a Westerly. Two races were abandoned due to extremely large shifts and unstable wind conditions and race committee had to wait for conditions to stabilize. No protests were heard, but judges did flag a number of boats.

Thanks to the judges Emily Hill, Clay Johnson, Matt Barry, and Meredith Killion. Also thanks to the Yale Sailing Team for running RC.
