MIT hosted this weekend's Schell Trophy in Tech Dinghies and FJ's. For the first time in the event's 27-year history, the host team, the MIT Beavers (nature's engineers), won the event. By being low point in B Division and second in A Division, Jack Fields, Julie Arsenault, Brooks Reed, Ellie Hass and Karlan Ruleman won the unofficial New England Fall Championship and qualified their team for the Atlantic Coast Championship at Ekerd College in Florida in two weeks.
Harvard and Roger Williams, who finished third and sixth at the Schell Trophy, also qualified for the ACC's. The full NEISA complement heading south in a couple of weeks includes: MIT, Yale, Harvard, BC, Tufts, Roger Williams and Brown.
Harvard's Kyle Kovacs and Elyse Dolbec won B Division with 92 points and were low point for the medium air regatta.
Regatta highlights
On Saturday a southerly breeze filled as the rain ended at 8-10 knots and it built to about 14 knots in the final set. A Division started in techs and B Division raced FJs through Race 10. Sunday brought a fresh and chilly WNW breeze at 10-15 knots.
Rip Hale, Lisa Keith and JM Modisette volunteered to judge on Saturday. Drew Buttner and Carl Zimba were on hand for Sunday's justice but there were no protests filed. Eric Gibber, Alvar Saenz-Otero, Ellen Pratt and Fran Charles were on RC and scoring. Wally Corwin and Conan Hom assisted on Dock Staff.
Both fleets of boats were equipped with GPS tracking devices provided by Kattack Performance Applications. Please go directly to the www.kattack.com site to download the racing action.
Schools with an asterisk had previously qualified for the ACCs at Eckerd College in 2 weekends. MIT, Harvard and Roger Williams won the final three NEISA berths. Congrats to the entire MIT Beaver Sailing Team who won the Unoffical Fall New England Championship for the first time in 27 years.
