3rd Annual Boston Harbor Islands Regatta SW
Island Alliance hosted the 3rd Annual Boston Harbor Islands Regatta last Saturday, September 29, 2007. A standout on the Boston sports calendar, this event has the support of both the state and city government, the Mass Bay Sailing Association and numerous area yacht clubs. Participation continues to grow, with this year's entry list topping 100 boats sailing in six PHRF classes.
The Boston Harbor Islands Regatta is a pursuit race with boats handicapped at the start (1st boat to finish wins) on a figure-eight course around islands with Georges Island at the crossing point. Unique among yachting events, the entire race course (with a close-up view at the start, half-way round and at the finish) is visible by spectators from the ramparts of Georges Island, which is an easy ferry ride from Boston’s Long Wharf and other Mass Bay points. All this with a glorious backdrop of the city skyline and Boston Light, the oldest lighthouse station in America.
This 2007 event is particularly meaningful as it is the finale of six races comprising the inaugural Mass Bay Sailing Pursuit Race Championship with some serious trophies on the line. For more information on this series, please visit www.MassBaySailing.org.
Participants were invited to a pre-race dinner with sponsors, City and State officials and local celebrities at the Boston Harbor Hotel, Friday evening, September 28. On Saturday, September 29, participants, families and friends were treated to an early Post-Race Cookout on Georges Island for the Awards Ceremony. Spectators, friends and family could make use of public ferries will be departing from downtown Boston every 30 minutes, with additional service from Quincy. Once out on Georges Island, they could spend the afternoon on Georges Island to see the race, join a kite-flying contest or take fishing lessons, celebrate your victory or simply enjoy a beautiful day on behalf of a great cause.
It is the goal of the Island Alliance that every Boston area child visit the Boston Harbor Islands national park area. Support of the 3rd Annual Boston Harbor Islands Regatta ensures the programming that can make that happen. Visiting the natural and cultural resources that continue to develop, on the islands and in the harbor, helps children understand their future roles as citizens and environmental stewards.
