Thundercats Are Go
by Sailworld on 25 Sep 2007
The fast, hugely exciting Thundercat boats will be in Portimao this weekend for more breathtaking action, with racing and crowd thrilling entertainment on both Saturday and Sunday within metres of Nikki Beach.
Thundercats race in a confined area to create the most excitement for the public. Racing is based on a 400 metre x 200 metre 'M' circuit that has five turn buoys including a chicane. The design, development and technical input has led to a new breed of quality boats with racing pedigrees that reach extreme speeds and out manoeuvre any other waterborne boat of similar size.
Each craft has a pilot and co-pilot; the co-pilot has the task of ensuring the boat does not lift vertically or flip by moving around the deck to redistribute weight. Not a job for the feint hearted but fascinating to watch!
The low power-to-weight ratio means that the craft are light, nimble and in rough weather can jump up to 4 metres off the surface. Stamina, fitness, agility, flexibility and shear grit determination are needed to make a true Thundercat team!
The International Thundercats series have been impressing crowds around Europe as a support class to the Powerboat P1 World Championship in 2006 and 2007. For more information visit the Thundercats website at www.thundercatracing.co.uk.
