Sonar Worlds - Shoot-out in Marblehead

by Lynn Fitzpatrick on 23 Sep 2007
Sonar Worldsd 2007 Boat Gear Direct . http://www.boatgeardirect.com.au
'It ended up being a one race shoot-out,' said Bill Lynn, 2007 Sonar World Champion skipper. Bill has had the 'same cast of characters' sailing with him for a long time.

Chris Huffstader, a fellow Jumbo, has been in the bow of Bill’s boats for 25 years. Chris has trimmed all sorts of jibs for Bill; he’s even frozen his tail off in the bow of an IC for Bill. Doug Savin and Ed Keller haven’t been sailing with Bill as long as Huff has, but they shared in the excitement as the foursome won the only race of the day and the final race of the Sperry Top-Sider 2007 Sonar World Championship series.

The 51-boat fleet was treated to a nice 10-15 knot southeasterly, but they were eager to get off the line. After a couple of general recalls, the fleet had to move to a different starting area about a half a mile away from the original one to avoid being in the way of some offshore work that was being done.

The fleet had a clean start in the new location, but 'the last 25% of the weather leg got really hairy,' according to Lynn. The boys from Eastern Yacht Club rounded the weather mark in fourth and Peter Galloway and his crew from Noroton Yacht Club rounded about 15 boats behind them.

One race was that entire Bill, Huff, Doug and Ed needed so that they could discard their BFD from the second race to end the regatta with 28 points. Aside from their BFD, they only had one double digit finish.

Only six points separated the second place boat from the seventh place boat. Greg Anthony and his crew on Troll took second place in the regatta with 37 points. Rick Dominique, who skippered his crew to an early lead in the regatta, sailed his throw out race today and finished third in the series. 2005 World Champion and one of the people who have done the most for the class over the years crossed the line in 17th place today and finished the regatta in four place.

Dirk Kneulman, making a swing south through New England for an Etchells regatta last weekend and the Sonar Worlds this week, was 5th overall.

[Sorry, this content could not be displayed] Bill Lynn and his colleagues at Atlantis WeatherGear have done a lot to support sailing in New England this season.

They’ve resurrected a label that many of us have known for years and come out with some functional attractive clothing that’s great for sailors, anglers, boaters, hikers and skiers.
