RYA Youth and Masters Windsurfing Championships

On Saturday, 15 September a diverse mix of top British talent and national event first-timers will descend on the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy for the ever-popular RYA Youth and Masters Windsurfing Championships - always one of the most hotly anticipated regattas on the windsurfing calendar.

Newly-crowned junior World champions Ali Masters (U17) and Sam Sills (U15) will head the line up at WPNSA following their gold medal winning success at the BIC Techno 293 World Championships in Formentera, Spain earlier this month.

But whether competing for an RYA National title or taking part in a National Championship for the first time, the emphasis is as much on enjoyment as good racing and over the course of two days, many mums and dads will also be competing in the Masters events.

Helen Cartwright, RYA National Windsurfing Coach, commented there is always something special about the Youth and Masters Championships.

She said: 'It is a really fun end-of-year event and everybody looks forward to it. The Championship gives those at the top of their game a high-level competitive event whilst at the same time providing those that aspire to progress a chance to compete on the same stage.

'It is great when you see parents and their kids taking part in the same event and even the most talented windsurfers having just as much fun as those who have never competed before.'

Racing will take place in 11 classes, including classes for those from team15 clubs, with prizes awarded to the top three male and females in each category as well as first newcomer. The Robert Cartwright Memorial Trophy, donated in memory of the aspiring West Zone Squad sailor who died in 2002, will also be presented to an outstanding young windsurfer.

A maximum of seven races per class are planned for the weekend with racing not commencing before 10.55am on Saturday and 9.55am on Sunday. Entrants will compete in course racing with, weather permitting, a long distance race on Sunday afternoon.
