The Rolex Veteran Boat Rally, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda since 1982 and sponsored by Rolex for the first time this year, takes place this week in Porto Cervo.

Divided into Vintage (launched before 1950) and Classic (wooden or metal craft launched before 1976 or replicas) categories, these elegant vessels will be joined by boats from the International 12 Metre Association. The 12 metre boats were used for many years in the America’s Cup and the fleet present in Porto Cervo includes James Gubelmann’s two-time America’s Cup winner Courageous (1974 1977) and 1980 Cup winner Freedom, chartered for this event by Clayton Deutsch.

After competing in yesterday’s YCCS 40th Anniversary regatta the 12 metres were unable to start their series today as a strong Sardinian mistral wind blew up this morning, gusting up to 30 knots, and the YCCS Race Committee decided to abandon racing for the day. Tomorrow’s forecast gives north easterly winds between 13 and 18 knots in the morning which should move around to east and drop to approximately 10 to 14 knots in the early afternoon.

Racing for the Vintage and Classic boats will begin on Thursday.

While I've mostly heard this phrase applied to climbing, skiing, and mountaineering, four late-winter and springtime races on Puget Sound this year exemplified the fact that this line.

The appeal of offshore
Is there still appeal? Have we made it too onerous? Why would someone take it up now? I had been pondering. Yes. Marquee events have no issue attracting entrants. Middle Sea, Transpac, Cape to Rio, Fastnet, and Hobart all spring to mind instantly, but what of the ‘lesser' races? Lots of boats in pens (slips) a lot of the time
