With over 216 yachts and almost 2,000 sailors competing for honours at Hamilton Island Race Week it was always going to be a tough contest to win any division.
The record fleet included five magnificent X-Yachts who all performed with great distinction over the week.
Graham and Louise Smith’s X-43, ‘Scaramouche’ took out the first place in Cruising Division 1. The boat and crew performed consistantly well throughout the week with 2-6-1-1-6 to claim 1st overall. With 41 yachts in this division it was a tough battle to win the trophy at the end of the week. Robert Green owner skipper of the X-562 ‘X-To-Sea’ also competed in this division and came home in 24th place, with a best performance of 10th in race 5.
Ian Box on the X-442 ‘Toy Box’ had a great week with a best performance of 2nd in Race 1 and finally placed 6th in the Cruiser Racer IRC division against 31 other yachts.
Two X-442’s competed in the very competitive Performance Racing division. Simon May and Bruce Marshall’s ‘Crossing’ was 18th overall with a best performance of 11th in races 3 and 6 and John and Chris Gardiner had an equally consistant regatta finishing in 20th place with a best performance of 11th in race 1.
North South Yachting, Australian importers of X Yachts, hosted several cocktail parties at various venues on the island. After most races the X Yacht skippers and crews enjoyed a drink together and had a chance to talk tactics for the next race or just enjoy the beautiful surroundings. No doubt they are all planning a return to paradise for Hamilton Island Race Week 2008.
