Assa Abloy and Tyco fight for lead in Volvo Ocean Race

by Volvo Race media on 30 Sep 2001
The fight for the lead is hot now between Assa Abloy and Tyco. Amer Sports
One lacked some speed during the last six hours, losing ground on
illbruck. Team News Corp must have anticipated the decrease in wind speed
in their lane and changed to illbruck's/Amer Sports One's track.

Aboard ASSA ABLOY, life is sunny as Mark Rudiger writes: 'Touchdown
49er's. Or at least that is what this san Francisco dreamer would be
shouting back home. Last nights sailing reminded us all why we keep coming
back in spite of all the beating and discomfort. We were reaching along in
16 plus knots with reaching spinnaker, bright moon, warm air, dolphins
chuffing all around and gaining bearing on our chiseling competitors. Not
bad for a night shift job. We're enjoying it while we can, because up
ahead is light air and blazing heat...not so much fun.'

Grief is building on the faces of the three trailing boats as the wind
comes from variable directions and for SEB it even comes from straight
behind and decreasing. They were constantly losing, during the last six
hours it was another 10 miles. Amer Sports Too and djuice sail on port
tack with winds from the southeast.
