Cadet Worlds 2007 SW
The Argentinian sailors at the International Cadet Class World Championships feel right at home in the conditions of North Wales as they made an early mark on day one in Pwllheli. Defending world champion, Argentina’s Francisco Cosentino, was lying in second place behind compatriot Francesco Gojenola as the two 17-year-olds got off to the strongest start.

Leading British Competitor is Amy Seabright, with Hannah Muskett crewing. They had a 3, 7, 24 to be in fifth place overall. Sixth are Tye Wichard and Ben Thame with a 10, 20, 6.

Also Katrina Brewer from Parkstone Yacht Club dragged herself back into contention after winning the third and final race of the day with her 11-year-old brother Christopher crewing with her, they are in seventh place overall.

Racing took place with the wind between 5-15 knots, increasing as the day wore on at Pwllheli Sailing Club on the Lleyn Peninsula on the North Wales coast.

Defending world champion, Argentina’s Francisco Cosentino, was lying in second place behind compatriot Francesco Gojenola as the two 17-year-olds got off to the strongest start. Cosentino finished second, sixth and second in his opening races, with 12-year-old crew Sancho Castro.

'Although it’s a bit cold at the end of a long day on the water, conditions have been very similar to my home club of River Plate in Argentina

Gojenola had the perfect opening, winning the first two races, and then finishing fifth in the third, along with 11-year-old crew Agustin Romero.

Brewer started badly, finishing 30th in the opening race, but improved through the day coming 9th in the second before winning the final race. 'That was great, apart from race one,' she said after coming off the water at Pwllheli in seventh place overall.

'That was in the lightest conditions of the day and I did not do very well, I certainly preferred the stronger wind of the last race where I led pretty much from start to finish.'

Corinthian Otters’ Amy Seabright, with crew Hannah Muskett, finished third in the first race of the day and followed that up with seventh finish in the second race. They finished the day as the top British crew in spite of a 24th finish in the third race.

There were five British crews in the top 10 at the end of the day with Tye Wichard and Ben Thame of Corinthian Otters in sixth, Joanna Freeman and Holly Francis of Parkstone in ninth, with Charlie Matthews and Christopher Sycamore also of Corinthian Otters in 10th.

Sixteen boats were black flagged in the final race for crossing the line before the start, which will have an impact on the competition until they can discard that result.
