Optimist Worlds summary and Teams Racing surprises

by Event media on 30 Jul 2007
NZ Team heading out on Teams Racing Day, Optimist Worlds 2007 NZ Optimist Team
Day 4, Saturday 28th July and the Team racing event, held in ideal 12-15 knot winds and completed with in six hours, was full of surprises.

Former medallists Peru and Poland did not even qualify. Then in the first race top seeds New Zealand lost out to the Netherlands 18-18 when their lead sailor crossed the finish line first to lose the race. Italy, seeded 3, went down to Ecuador.

In Round 2 Greece, which had beaten 4th seeds Spain in the first round, also disposed of Argentina, historically the most successful nation, while Ecuador continued to progress by beating Sweden.

Round 3 saw some of the teams defeated in Round 1 re-emerge as challengers, most notably Italy which had recovered by wins over France and Denmark, and Bermuda which had lost to Singapore: both teams secured their places in the top 5 by further victories in the fourth round.

The 'fast-track' match between the only two teams so far undefeated saw a surprise victory by Greece over 2006 champions Singapore. Since the principle of the repechage system is that it takes two defeats to be eliminated however, the Asians had a second chance which they took by beating Bermuda to qualify for the final. In the other semi-final Ecuador again defeated Italy but, going down to Singapore, were relegated to third place over-all.

The final was thus between Greece and Singapore. The Greeks won the first of three exciting matches, lost the second but took the final race to win gold for the first time in the 22 year history of the event.

Tomorrow Sunday the sailors have a well-deserved rest day.

On Day 3 only one race was sailed due to light and falling winds.

Chris Steele (NZL), Benjamin Grez (CHI) and Lucas Swan (BRA) have now established a clear lead and are expected to be near the top of the leaderboard when the first discard is taken after Race 6 (sorry for the error yesterday). Many of those affected by OCS/BFD penalties in Race 3 did not score well today though there are some notable exceptions such as Sacha Pelisson (FRA).

There is also a clear divide between those who flourished in the heavy weather of day 1 and those who prefer lighter winds. Rachel Lee (SIN) is beginning to stake her claim to the girls' prize by being one of the few who have stayed in the top 20 under very different conditions, though Alexandra Maloney (NZL) could be a threat when she discards her 56th from today's race.

Tomorrow (Saturday) fleet racing is suspended in favour of the World Team Racing Championship. The seeding for that championship, based on the results of the top four sailors per team in the first five races including discards, produced some shocks. Peru, frequent finalists, failed to qualify as did GBR and Japan.

Seeding is:
1 NZL v 16 NED
2 DEN v 15 ISV
3 ITA v 14 ECU
4 ESP v 13 GRE
5 MAS v 12 ARG
6 SWE v 11 FRA
7 SIN v 10 BER
8 AUT v 9 CRO

On Day 2 a total of over 60 OCS and BFD disqualifications in race three had a dramatic, if probably temporary effect on the cumulative results after four races. The first discard is taken after six races.

Winds were lighter than on day one with a maximum of 12 knots but there was no problem in running two good races.

The main beneficiaries of the the starting penalties were the New Zealanders who now occupy three of the top six places. Benjamin Grez of Chile, 8th last year is now the best placed of the pre-regatta favourites in 2nd place. The lighter winds also produced a radical change in the quality of results for sailors such as Balder Tobiassen (DEN) and Benjamin Bildstein (AUT).

Some complicated mathematics are required to guess at the leaderboard when the first discard is taken. Certainly reigning world champion Julian Autenrieth (GER) with OCS/34 for the day has a long climb back to his overnight lead and a good race 5 could bring sailors such as Mohd Asri (MAS), Tita Ruggero (ITA) and Matias Rengifo (PER) to the fore.

The number of starting penalties may also have an effect on the qualification and seeding of teams for the World Team-Racing Championship for which 'After the first 5 races sailed in the BCC the total points of the 4 sailors with the best cumulative results from each country will be added to give a total team score. '
