Anthea Dunning reports on the 2007 World Optimist Championships:

Wednesday 18th July

Well it’s a long way from Auckland to Cagliari. Five airports and 36 hours later we were delighted and relieved to be met at the airport by Guido Ricetto the regatta organizer.

We were 12 tired people, five sail tubes five sets of foils and baggage (minus Ray’s bag that Emirates had left in Dubai!), so it was great to see a big van and car to take us straight to the hotel in Quartu S Elena. Apparently the organizers have divided the 54 countries coming to the Worlds into three categories (good, OK and bad) depending on how well organized they have been with bookings and payments. Guido was pleased to report that NZ is in the good list! Many thanks there to Maryanne and Phil and NZIODA!

Today dawned clear and hot with a light sea breeze that filled in at around 11am, less than 10 knots.

The team got their boats with relative ease, 3 Nautivelas and 2 Nordest. The boys were successfully fitted out and rigged to be on the water at 3 o’clock for a short sail only today. (Alex rested up after being a bit under the weather). Then back to the hotel pool to cool down! While there seem to be quite a few teams here, only a few were out on the water today. We have seen many of the Europeans arriving with their own boats and trailers, some have driven a long way!
We are looking forward to good Italian pizza tonight, and then on the water tomorrow. We are lucky with the facilities here, there is a pizzeria under the hotel, the pool is a great temperature (compulsory for everyone to wear a bathing cap!) and it’s only a 5 minute walk past olive trees a herd of goats to get to the sailing centre and the supermarket.
