Information on Takapuna and the North Shore

by Richard Gladwell on 25 Nov 2007
Takapuna Beach and facilities Google Earth

One of the features of the Takapuna Worlds 2008 is the all facilities are within an easy walk of the regatta venue and boatpark.

In the photo above, the Takapuna Boating Club is located at the northern end of Takapuna Beach. the boat park is contained in a grassy park just to the south of the club and runs between the road and beach.

To the south (bottom of photo) is the Spencer on Byron multi-level hotel where many competitors will be staying.

To the north (top end) is the Westfield Shore City multi-level shopping mall with a large food hall. It is open for normal shopping hours seven days a week (late night Thursday). A 24 hour supermarket with all the usual, plus takeway food and wine is about 1.5km from Shore City.

The Bruce Mason Centre will be the venue for several functions during the 2008 World Championships, it als has cafes and restuarants in its environs.

The main street of Takapuna (Hurstmere Road) runs between the Bruce Mason Centre and Spencer on Byron hotel. It has numerous cafes, bars and shops.

Parking is at a premium in Takapuna. A car is not essential, apart from travel outside the Takapuna area. It is easier to walk and carry gear to the club and regatta venue, or just drop off from the car and park it elsewhere. There is no parking in the boatpark.

For a Google map of the Takpuna area http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=-36.784748,174.772482&spn=0.038495,0.093555&z=14&om=1!click_here. The Takapuna Boating Club is located at the top end of Gould Reserve.

For additional information, the North Shore City Council runs an excellent website with full information on the Takapuna area and North Shore region generally.

The site has a searchable database of accomodation, which includes daily rates and website information see: www.northshorenz.com

Grand Final not run yet, but our Hobart coverage begins with something very cool Maybe a tad earlier than last year, which I think was after the Grand Final, but the 100th entrant seemed like a good place to set things off. Now with that said, Sail-World's Hobart coverage begins.

Carbon or Steel?
Moth Foil Evolution with Alex Adams Foils have been shrinking for years as sailors continually try to reduce drag and increase speeds, but designers were reaching the limit of what they could do with carbon, so the latest foils have turned to steel for some parts.

A look 'below decks' at the hidden control systems on Kyle's International Moth Why are all the ropes hidden on all the latest International Moths? It's all about aerodynamic efficiency as the boats get faster and faster. As we find out with Kyle, there are also some very clever systems under the carbon covers.

The XR 41's journey from sketch to World Champion In 2023 I took part in my first X-Yachts Gold Cup at Aarhus in Denmark. It was a glorious event, balancing fun and competition perfectly, and was a weekend where new friendships were formed with sailors who I continue to chat with regularly.
