A moderate to fresh South East breeze and a choppy sea state added to a spectacular day of Outrigger Canoe racing in the International Powerade Hamilton Island Cup regatta yesterday.

Supremely fit aquatic athletes representing 91 teams from 13 nations and 41 clubs from around Australia mastered the testing conditions with a number of exciting results in the OC1 (single crew) 250m finals.

Amanda Ozolins representing Mooloolaba produced a sustained rate of power paddling over the Catseye Bay course to score a convincing 5 second win in the Open Womens final while Kathy White from Mission Beach and Melbourne’s Lisa Spain raced neck and neck for the minor medals.

White surged in the last few metres to win the Silver Medal by three tenths of a second.

The competition for the Master Men’s medals was also very close and remained in doubt before Tony Bishop representing the Coffs Coast clinched the Gold Medal by one second over the fast finishing Jeff Le Marnsey (Mooloolaba) and Aaron Kirby from the Mackay Malanuka club.

Chris Maynard racing under the Outrigger Australia colours continued on with his consistent regatta results at Hamilton Island by outpacing the super strong Mooloolaba athlete Danny Sheard and Hamilton Island’s Warren Cuffe to win the Senior Master Men final in a quick 1 minute 14 seconds.

Racing continues off Hamilton Island today with the OC6 16km Marathon and 500 m Sprint finals for nine OC6 classes.
