The sun set well before some of the Tybee 500 teams made it to their final destination, Tybee Island, Georgia. It was a grueling week of point to point racing from Southeast Florida to Tybee Island, Georgia, near Savannah.
Sun, wind, surf, rocks, beach erosion and unexpected tides gave the teams a run for their money. Oolaalaa met the challenge of the elements the best and completed the six legs with a total elapsed time of 43:42:50.
Team Tybee and Tiki Watersports – Orange completed the race over two hours behind the winners. Others endured the conditions and limped in with broken equipment.
In some cases the damage was enough to pack up the boat and 360 some odd days to work up the nerve to try again next year. Congratulations to all those who sailed, supported the teams and organized the race.
