David Trask scores points in Portugal F1 Powerboat

by Media Services on 18 May 2007 The Brisbane based Formula 1 powerboat team of Bob and David Trask recorded a solid start to the opening round of the 2007 UIM World F1 Powerboat series.

David Trask finished in the points with a great 7th position outright, while older brother Bob Trask came home in 11th position in a 23 boat strong field.

Coming off an intensive summer season of boat development and testing, the two boat Trask Development Corporation / Sea Quest Boats entered the series opener at Portiamo in Portugal well prepared and confident.

The weekend began well with David Trask qualifying in 8th position with Bob on 11th place on the grid.

'We have consistently stated that to do well at this level of F1 racing, we need to be in the top ten boats on the start grid,' Bob Trask said.

'To have any chance at being in the lead pack after 60 laps, we must be right up there in sight of the leaders from flag fall.'

In a rough and tumble event, the Portugal F1 GP was marked by two accidents forcing two re-starts. David Trask rated the race conditions as being very rough over a wind blown course.

'Through the race there were five boats all handed out penalties for striking the turn buoys,' David Trask said. 'This is an unprecedented number of infringements and serves to indicate just how tough the conditions were out on the eight turn circuit.'

'This was a race that was particularly taxing physically.'

After the spray had settled, David Trask come home in a very creditable 7th placing, just one lap down on race winner and reigning world champion Scott Gillman from the US. David had the sixth fastest lap of the race posting this on lap 53 of the 60 lap GP, just 1.31 seconds slower than Scott Gillman.

'As a team we were happy to finish and survive the carnage today,' Bob Trask said. 'It was a good result for David to be among the points as to win the World F1 Championship you need to be scoring points throughout the year. We have a good race package and need to now find greater race speed to get further up the field at the next round in France.'

The next round of the 2007 UIM World F1 Powerboat series is to be staged on France’s west coast in the city of La Rochelle on Saturday/Sunday May 19th and 20th.
