Lovely last in Cruising Division is the little Swanson 28 called Anka.

Three years ago Brad McCann and his brother in law Steve Hargans (Hargs) decided to take the little boat on an epic journey north from its Lake Macquarie home to the Whitsundays. They figured that if they set out in June 2001, they would be able to do Hamilton Race race week.

But it was a wild dream at the time and the guys bravely agreed that Brad would shave his head and Steve would dye his hair blond if the whole expedition actually happened.

On June 26th 2001, Anka sailed north. With a shallow draft, the little 1980 built canoe hulled boat was able to stop in ports all the way north. After stopping in Laureton and Iluka, Brad and Steve spent three weeks in Southport, then went inside Fraser, out to Lady Musgrave, Great Keppel and Middle Percy and then on to Hamilton. On the way Harland Hogan joined the boat has bow/tactician

They have been having a great time. Says Brad 'We been getting plenty of time on the water, 'cause we are so slow the time limit keeps expiring on us. We reckon if we get a 20-knot day we are sure to finish. But everyone's been super friendly. Our wives are coming up next week and we'll all have a holiday together. Steve will be blonde and I'll be shiny by the end of Thursday lay day.'

Photos of Anka on the racecourse will be posted shortly.
