Audi Sydney Southport Race - Twenty boats finished

by Lisa Ratcliff on 26 Mar 2007
Beau Geste Andrea Francolini / Audi http://www.afrancolini.com
Twenty boats have now finished the Audi Sydney Southport Yacht Race with all but one of the remaining 14 at sea due to cross in quick succession before 7.30pm tonight thanks to the cool and gusty 30-35 knot sou’easter which is currently blasting onto the south east Queensland coastline.

Results for half of the six handicap divisions have now been confirmed with Ray Roberts’ Quantum Racing claiming first place in IRC Division 0 ahead of the line honours winner, Matt Allen’s Ichi Ban, and second over the line, Grant Wharington’s Skandia.

Karl Kwok’s Beau Geste is the confirmed winner of IRC Division 1, an impressive result for the brand new Reichel/Pugh 45 sailing in its second race after being launched in New Zealand in January.

Beau Geste, representing the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club, beat Sydney boats Wot Yot, a Nelson/Marek 52 skippered by owner Graeme Wood, and another Reichel/Pugh design, Yendys, owned by Geoff Ross.

IRC Division 2 top honours have gone to Queensland boat Wedgetail owned by Bill Wild. Last night the crew were holding onto the handicap lead in very heavy conditions and praying winds wouldn’t abate. Their prayers were answered with consistent strong breeze all night.

Wedgetail beat West Australian yachtsman Alan Brierty and his Corby 49 Limit, which suffered steering damage yesterday, and Syd Fischer’s Farr 50 Ragamuffin.

A few boats required assistance to enter the Gold Coast Seaway this morning, Michael Martin’s Frantic suffering a broken tiller and engine problems during the race and Howard de Torres’ Nips n Tux finishing with a broken water pump and flat batteries.

Conditions in the Audi Sydney Southport continue to take their toll on the fleet with Queensland boat Lloyds Business Brokers Too Impetuous the latest retirement. This brings the total number of retirements to eleven from a starting line up of 45.

Retiring this morning with fuel leaks, Rudy Weber’s restored 1981-built Too Impetuous looked to have a pre-race bet with neighbour Ian Thomson of a case of Verve sewn up when Thomson’s Identity Crisis pulled into Newcastle for six hours on the first night.

Now Identity Crisis, which is bringing up the rear and is due in the early hours of tomorrow morning, is set to win the wager.

Both Barry Kelly’s Typhoon and David Beak’s Mr Beaks Ribs retired overnight, the former with sail damage.

Here is the latest race data from the official site, links are not live.
