MHYC succeeds in Bridge opening times debate
by Alister Morison on 15 Feb 2007
A threatened change in opening hours of Sydney's Spit Bridge could be severely disadvantaged the yachting community. However a sensible compromise has been found by the local yacht club.
The Middle Harbour Yacht Club (MHYC) Vice Commodore Racing Alister Morison has lead the fight and now reports.
'Following on from the weight of submissions from MHYC members and the broader boating community MHYC was invited in to make a direct submission in a meeting with the Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA).
'In doing so we recognised the political pressure on the RTA and were able to deliver a timetable of bridge openings that will meet the needs of the MHYC, the boating community and the RTA.
'The new timetable which comes into effect on Monday 2 April 2007 will retain the 11:30hrs and 16:30hrs openings which are so important for the spring and summer racing programs and will introduce a 10:00hrs opening that will improve winter racing access for boats moored west of the Spit Bridge.
'The 14:30hrs opening was retained to make returning after winter racing possible.
'Thanks are due to the members who took considerable time over Christmas and New Year to protect the interests of MHYC and its members, as well as the broader boating community.'
