The world's only female powerboat World Champion, Jackie Hunt from Hampshire, England, will be in Lisbon, Portugal, on Friday 16th February at Nauticampo - the popular boating and camping exhibition - to attend a press conference on behalf of Portimao, recently confirmed as host city for the final European round of the 2007 Powerboat P1 World Championship.
This exciting announcement brings together a dynamic lifestyle sport, backed by global TV exposure and one of Europe's most ambitious and forward thinking resort destinations. Portimao is also fast establishing a reputation as a major events city and the spectacular 40million Euro resort of Marina de Portimao will play host to P1 for at least the next three years. In 2007, the P1 Portuguese Grand Prix will take centre stage over the weekend of 29th/30th September.
Over 100,000 people are expected to attend Nauticampo, taking place at the Feira Internacional de Lisboa (FIL), and the City of Portimao has chosen this high profile occasion to draw attention to its latest top tier sporting acquisition.
Joining Jackie and her husband/racing navigator Mike Shelton will be the Mayor of Portimao, Manuel da Luz; President of the Marina de Portimao, Eurico Correia; representative of the Portuguese Federation, Mario Gonzaga Ribeiro; the ambassador for Powerboat P1 in Portugal, Carlos Sousa; and CEO of Powerboat P1, Nathan Knight.
The 25 sleek, high powered racing machines of Powerboat P1, the 'star attraction' in a packed season of events planned in Portimao, will utilise the stunning facilities of the 25 hectare Marina de Portimao during the race weekend. These include 620 moorings, a 4-star apartment hotel, shopping mall, watersports centre and yacht club. The marina development is part of a major initiative to revitalise and enhance the coastline, creating a fresh energy and impetus to attract all year round visitors to the area.
This long-term franchise relationship guarantees Portimao the much coveted final European Grand Prix of the World Championship season and this will take place during the last weekend of September. In each of the past three years the P1 World Championship titles have gone down to the wire, decided in the last race of the last event.
Visitors to the Portimao stand at Nauticampo will be able to see action footage from the Powerboat P1 World Championship and find out more about the planned programme of entertainment on-and-off the water that makes a Powerboat P1 Grand Prix of the Sea weekend such a memorable occasion.
