Grundig Xena 24 hour run in soft conditions
by Rob Kothe on 31 Jul 2001
The first 24 hour run for Grundig Xena only 332 miles, well short of Bernard Stamm's Open 60 World record of 467 miles.
However Sean Langman talking by mobile phone from the New South Wales north coast was pleased with the light wind hit-out. 'We knew from the outset that conditions were softening too fast. Our top ten minute sustained speeds have only been in the 18-19 knot range.
But every time we go out we improve our chances for the time when conditions are right.
We've been working hard on the durability of the boat, on every level and its paying off.
The Brisbane to Gladstone record breaking run and this effort has shown that we have the speed , the crew and the durability to break the 24 hour record. We just have to be patient and wait for the right conditions.'
