UK electronics manufacturer Tacktick won the News Business Excellence Award for Innovation last week for its Micronet range of wireless electronics.
The awards, which are held each year in Portsmouth, attracted a record-breaking 131 entries in eight categories from companies and individuals across the region.
'These awards are very important for a company like Tacktick; they recognise the importance of small innovative companies such as ourselves which lead the field in terms of wireless marine electronics,' says joint managing director Clive Johnson, whose company beat off competition from industry stalwarts BAe Systems, Halyard, Eads Astrium and McMurdo. 'The award is a fantastic boost for our team and a great start to 2007 when we will be celebrating 10 years of wireless electronics.'
More than 500 companies from in and around the Portsmouth area attended the black-tie ceremony last week, which is now in its fifth year.
Formed in 1996 by joint managing directors Clive and Mark Johnson, Tacktick claims to be the first company in the world to produce wireless, solar-powered navigation instruments for cruising and racing boats with full NMEA interface.
The group, which is based in Emsworth, Hampshire, is to launch a number of new products this year, including the wireless Race Master for sports and keel boats, the wireless Power Boat Wind instrument for motorboat owners and the wireless Remote Display.
