Bay of Plenty on top in Starling and P-class

by Sail-World on 24 Jan 2007
Bay of Plenty’s Sam Meech has won the Starling Match Racing Nationals being sailed at the Nelson Yacht Club. Thomas Saunders from Tauranga is top of the points table with one day’s racing left in the Tauranga Cup.

In contrast to yesterday’s strong winds the breeze today settled in at 10kts flicking to 12kts, however it was startline behaviour that caused headaches for officials, rather than the elements.

The Race Officer took a hard line with competitors introducing increasingly draconian penalties in an effort to get the races started successfully. Sixteen competitors were eliminated from the start of the final race of the day, after breaking the Black Flag rule. (Meaning that competitors who break the startline are excluded from that and subsequent starts of that race.)

One of those caught was overnight leader, Chelsea Whitburn, who sailed well in the heavy conditions of yesterday. The high level of elimination led to protests ashore, however the Race Committee were able to produce a video of the starts to confirm their decisions.

Whitburn did not have a good day today – turning in a 12,16 and BFD scorecard dropping her down to third overall 21 points behind Saunders and 12 points adrift of Jamie Dawson (Murrays Bay) who is in second place overall.

Observers at the regattas report that Saunders has handled the varied conditions very well, placing first and second in the last two races today and with an eighth place as his worst of the regatta. Clearly the wheels will really have to fall off his performance for Saunders, to lose the title and the Tanner/Tauranga Cups double. But this has definitely been a regatta of reward for consistency.

In the Starlings, Meech won all his ten matches to be a convincing winner, from local sailor Matt Vincent on nine wins and one loss, with Andy Maloney (Northland) on eight wins and two losses.

The prizegiving will be held tomorrow night, with former Sailor of the Year and New Zealand sailing legend, Chris Bouzaid presenting the prizes and no doubt giving a few words of advice, to the young sailors.
