38th Manly Junior Sunsmart National Championships

by Sally Darmanin on 12 Jan 2007
The 38th Manly Junior Sunsmart National Championships hosted by Nedlands Yacht Club WA is now complete!

Congratulations to our winner Vincent Langen and Lucia Langen sailing Vincent Van Go 2747 from RPAYC Pittwater. Runner up is Angela Bates and Ashley Atkins from Cronulla sailing Two Chances 2722. These two boats cleared out from the fleet with consistent top six placings throughout the regatta, Angela was leading up until heat 5. Vincent won Heat 4 and 5 to be clear three points for the final race.

The final race was a heart-stopper with both 2737 and 2722 back in the fleet. Huge improver Quantam Leap (James and Isabela Lawira Fernandez led the race with Robert and Kasha Wojcik 2705 in Rad Rat and Paul Darmanin and Lucy Copeland in Roaring Forties 2740 tussling it out to secure their eventual third and fouth positions overall for the series.

Throughout the race minor placings were constantly changing. Angela nearly pulled off a miracle by sailing fantastically up the last work to put a few boats between her and Vincent. Vincent held his nerve to squeeze out one more boat on the finish line to ensure had enough margin to take the title.

The title was won by one point margin. This reflected one of the most interesting Nationals for many years with no positions in the bag until the final gun.

The Novice Fleet for First time skipper was won on consistency by Ryan and Annie Rose Wilmot who also won the series overall on scratch

The appeal of offshore
Is there still appeal? Have we made it too onerous? Why would someone take it up now? I had been pondering. Yes. Marquee events have no issue attracting entrants. Middle Sea, Transpac, Cape to Rio, Fastnet, and Hobart all spring to mind instantly, but what of the ‘lesser' races? Lots of boats in pens (slips) a lot of the time
