New Zealand leads Optimist Worlds in Uruguay

by Peter Dawson on 4 Jan 2007
Day 3 of the Optimist World Championships in Uruguay Event Media
Peter Dawson reports:

Hi all, straight off the water after racing so all results are preliminary!

Another day where Kiwis were noticed on the water big time!

Highlight of the day was Marcus getting another gun, Chris making it a quinella in the same race (first country to post a 1,2 in the same race so far this regatta) and Thomas getting another second to send him up the leaderboard.

In the last flight of the day, when the sea breeze finally kicked in, all the kiwis found their ideal conditions and even though confirmed results are yet to be posted, we think all the boys finished in the top 25 positions in their last race today. So to a sailor, they were smoking and Wilzy got a few very positive comments from his fellow coaches about how good they looked. We temper that all by saying that the regatta is only half way through, but all the boys finished today on a high which hopefully will carry them through to Teams racing tomorrow.

Racing got underway in conditions very different from what the weather forecasters were saying. Yesterdays swell had subsided considerably and the wind was a moderate 8 – 10 knots and dying rapidly. In the first flight, Thomas and Marcus had solid top 10 places, Jamie and Luca top 20’s and Chris a 30ish. A couple of the boys were having to be very conservative with their starts to avoid further OCS or Black Flags, so they were having to come through the fleet as their races progressed.

The breeze died down to under 5 knots by the time they got away on their second races and those on support boats noticed that the current had flicked around 180 degrees, caused by the river flows from all the rain the previous night. This race was painful for our guys and they all struggled to follow the Asians, Europeans and sailors weighing around 35Kg. Thomas scored in the late 20’s Chris mid 30’s, Marcus had his drop race coming in late 30’s and Jamie & Luca had late third of the fleet finishes. There were a total of 64 (that’s right 64!!) OCS in those first two races, so the starter was taking no prisoners. So far, we think none of the Kiwis were pinged, so hopefully we have learnt.

Then all went quiet and the AP was put up while the race officer waited for the sea breeze to kick in. Amazingly, within a matter of minutes the wind changed direction 180 degrees and filled in to a steady 12-15 knots and good chop – just like Kawau and Torbay sometimes. That’s when our guys really featured, all of them positioned towards the front of the fleet by the wing mark, all going well down wind and reaching.

A great finish to the day and there was a buzz from our guys, all looking forward to tomorrows racing. At the time of print, the NZL team had qualified in 10th place of the 16 teams for Teams racing and we expect that first up will be the German team featuring the first two days of the regatta leader Julian Autenreith. Bring it on, hopefully we can report good things for tomorrow.
