Kiwis dominate in 420 Pre-Worlds

by Sail-World on 30 Dec 2006
420 Pre-Worlds Day 3 - Open Fleet Richard Gladwell www.photosport.co.nz

It would be an understatement to say the New Zealand crews dominated the 420 Pre-Worlds regatta sailed off Takapuna Beach.

The series concluded after nine races, with eight New Zealand crews in the top ten of the Women’s event, and seven Kiwi crews in the top ten in the Open event.

Top crew in the Womens fleet was the combination of Sarah Bilkey and Rosie Sargisson from Kohimaramara YC. The overnight leaders, Jo Aleh and Olivia Powrie dropped to second overall after picking up their second starting infringement - which could not be dropped under the one discard race system that applied for this regatta. Third overall was a Sandspit YC crew of Stephanie Hazard and Cindy Hamilton, who with an OCS, were just four points behind Powrie and Aleh. Fourth overall was the fast finishing Kohimaramara crew of Maddy Urry and Alexandra Davies – giving the club five sailors in the top eight.

In the Open fleet, the defending World champions of Carl Evans and Peter Burling elected to sit out the final race, after incurring a second penalty under RRS 42 (Propulsion) which meant they were required to withdraw immedidately from that race. The two decisions dropped them down the final points table into 10th position. Even Evans and Burling won three of the seven races they sailed and were clearly the dominant crew.

The series was won by Australia’s Sam Kivell and Max Taylor, with the Canterbury crew of Derek Scott and Jamie Hunt almost 30 points back, with a gap of 24 points to the third placed crew of Mike Snow-Hansen and Josh McCormack. The French crew of Vincent Berthez and Thibault Heurley were fourth ahead of a line-up of another four Kiwi crews.

The Opening Ceremony for the Worlds will be on Monday, with the Practice race on Tuesday and the first three races scheduled to be sailed on Wednesday 3rd January (NZT).
