Meet Sam the Seal, something of an institution at Hobart’s Constitution Dock.
Sam arrived at the inner dock some three years ago, having fared the worse for an encounter with a ship’s propeller.
Presumably unfit for hunting, Sam decided he’d better get someone else to do the hard work and having weighed up the options, selected Mako’s Diner, a floating fish and chip eatery at the dock, within sight of the Rolex Sydney Hobart media centre.
'He’s never really left' according to Dave from Mako’s Diner, whom Sam appears to consider his prep chef 'apart from a month in October when he heads off for the mating season, he’s here most days'.
Sam has clearly got used to the cushy life too.
'He’s become a fussy eater' says his namesake Sam, from Mako’s 'you can’t just throw him any old fish, he’ll only eat Salmon, Ocean Trout or Trevalle now'.
It seems that Sam has his pension sealed for life.
