The son of Sir Peter Blake, famous New Zealand sailor who was murdered while sailing in 2001, is heading to the frozen continent to fulfil a promise of his father.
Nineteen-year-old James Blake has signed up to take part in an expedition to restore historic huts used by Antarctic explorers Ernest Shackleton and Robert Falcon Scott during their early Antarctic expeditions.
But 100 years in Antarctica's harsh environment has left them needing a bit of TLC. Blake will be working as a general hand on the expedition, working alongside carpenters and professional conservators.
He says it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and is looking forward to the challenge.
Sir Peter Blake, was murdered by South American pirates while sailing on the Amazon in 2001. Before his death he promised to help save the huts near Scott Base - a pledge James Blake is determined to fulfil.
'Dad wanted to do his bit to preserve the huts of his heroes,' he says.
