The Optimist World Championships start on the 29 December in Montevideo, Uruguay at the Uruguayo YC. Over 200 entries are expected from more than 50 countries.

The Optimist pre-worlds event, the Rioplatense Championship, was won by Ben Graz of Chile, with Jose Jimenez also from Chile second and Stephanie Zimmerman from Peru third.
