Regatta President, Santi Kanchanabandhu, former Commodore of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club talks about the 20th Phuket King’s Cup Regatta

‘This year is the 20th anniversary of the most prestigious yacht Phuket King’s Cup Regatta, held off the beautiful island of Phuket, Southern Thailand. The Regatta started in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of HM the King of Thailand and held every year ever since.

For the past 20 years this regatta is dedicated to HM the King of Thailand who was a gold medal sailor and our Royal Patron.

The five days series races involve different courses from scenic island passages to Olympic courses and short windward-leeward course. It is a popular tradition for Phuket King’s Cup that each race day will be ended with great price giving party in the evening when sponsor of the day give away its trophy for the day race.

At the end of series the winner of each class will be awarded with the prestigious replica trophy of Phuket King’s Cup in the Royal Award Ceremony.

This year we are pleased that so many sailors have come and participate in the celebration of HM the King’s 79 Birthday and also the auspicious 60 anniversary of HM accession to the throne. We have a record number of 102 entries from all parts of the world with over thousand sailors, international media and spectators.

The Phuket King’s Cup is a charity yacht race legend which continues to attract sailors from all parts of the world. The fleet this year was divided into 13 different classes from Competitive Racing Class to Ocean Rover where many beautiful crafts grace the Andaman Seas with whole family on board as crews.

More than a yacht race, Phuket King’s Cup is a lifestyle event which has gained popularity amongst sailors in Asia and Australasia and now from Europe and North America, as a racing circuit that one should not miss.'
