Varied wind conditions marked the first Special Olympics National Regatta staged at Lake Tuggeranong ACT last weekend for sailors with intellectual disabilities, a joint initiative of Special Olympics Australia and Sailability Australia.

After a colourful official opening by Senator Gary Humphries, two days of spirited competition ensued with sailors participating from ACT, NSW and Queensland.

Awardee: Kevin Bulmer, Sailability Belmont, the sailor who most embodied the Special Olympics Athlete Oath 'Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt'.

From the results, a squad will be selected to make up the Australian Special Olympics Team to represent Australia at the Special Olympics Summer World Games to be held in Shanghai, China in October 2007.
