First day of the Skandia RYA Sail for Gold Regatta (13 - 15 October) at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy. Its been a hard day on the water, with contrasting conditions. Rain and light winds at the start of the day were replaced by sunshine and an increasing breeze, peaking at about 12 knots on the 49er course.

Leading after the first day are Mark Powell (Laser) without winning a race. Paul Goodison won two races but is also counting a 15 from the first race. In the Radial fleet Penny Clark leads ahead of Laura Baldwin in another high scoring series. Andrea Brewster won the final race but had a 32 and a 28 in the earlier races to be 17 overall.

In the Finn class, the leading three overall shared the race wins. Matt Howard leads overall, one point ahead of Ireland's Tim Goodbody, with Ed Wright in third.

In the 470, Nic Asher and Elliott Willis lead the Men ahead of Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield, who are tied on points with Luke Patience and Chris Gurbe. In the Women's series, Ally Martin and Lottie Clay lead from Hannah Mills and Rachel Larman. The women’s fleet saw the withdrawal of pre-event favourites Christina Bassadone and Saskia Clark through an injury to Clark.

Stevie Morrison and Ben Rhodes lead the 49er series with a 1, 1, 2 scoreline. Second are Germany's Jan Peter Peckolt and Hannes Peckolt with Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez of Spain in third place.

'We couldn’t really have asked for a much better start with two firsts and a second from today,' said Morrison. 'We’re pretty pleased but it’s still early days.'

In the Tornado, Germany's Johannes Polgar and Florian Spalteholz lead ahead of Britain's Leigh McMillan and Will Howden by one point. Rob Wilson and Mark Bulkeley are in third after two races.

Shirley Robertson started her comeback with a win in the first race of the Yngling event but then dropped to ninth in the second and finished the day in fourth overall. Leader is Ingrid Söderström (SWE) with second Mandy Mulder (NED).

'A good day and a bad day,' said Robertson. 'It was good to get out there and racing again and it certainly blew the cobwebs away.

'We just need to get some more racing time in as a team – today was quite tricky in some ways, but we’re finding our way and every day we’re getting better and better.'

Robertson’s former teammates Sarah Ayton and Sarah Webb, sailing with new crew member Pippa Wilson, got off to a conservative start, posting a couple of mid-fleet results before being subsequently disqualified from both of the day’s races as Webb was judged to have infringed the regatta rules by not wearing a buoyancy aid.

Nick Dempsey took two bullets in the RS:X 9.5m fleet’s two races, while Kim Jiskoot currently heads up the 8.5m table, with Bryony Shaw in second and the top female sailor in that fleet.
