San Francisco Star Worlds Day 2

Tight at the top after day two with the Swiss pairing of Flavio Marazzi and Martin Kozaczek winning todays race and leading the series from the New Zealand crew of Rohan Lord and Miles Addy.

Today the two crew finished first and second in the second race of the 2006 Wells Fargo Star Worlds. Overall Brazilian Robert Scheidt is third with American Andy Horton fourth.

Britain's Iain Percy and Steve Mitchell finished 16th and are 24th overall.

Sailing in winds of around 10 kts on San Franscico Bay Lord and Addy were down in 15th place around the first mark, but climbed out of the ruck to be fourth at the second, and then bumped off class veteran Bill Buchan to ease into third.

Next up were the Stegmeier brothers from Switzerland, who were picked off as Lord and Addy moved into second.

On the water observers were unstinting in their praise of Lord and Addy's sailing - with their speed, ability to sail clear of the ruck on the first leg and then play a very controlled race at the front of the fleet to consolidate their position.

The second New Zealand crew of Hamish Pepper and Carl Williams, did not have such a good day of it and are believed to have finished in around 20th spot, which would probably still keep them in the top ten overall. Australian's Murray and Palfrey were 30th overall and are now 14th in the regatta.

The race winner today was Flavio Marazzi and Martin Kozaczek from Switzerland, they finished fourth yesterday and take the countback from Lord and Addy by virtue of the fact they have the best places. The Swiss crews were ahead of the Kiwis by a margin of about 10 seconds, with a pack finishing close behind.

The breeze was light but constant today, described as Qingdao conditions (the 2008 Olympic sailing venue). Crews were droop hiking for most of the race as the wind built to about 10 kts, and towards the end, the skippers began to hike hard, too.

The regatta continues tomorrow with a further race in the six event series.
