Reigning North American Etchells Champion Jud Smith has served notice that he will be a major force at the upcoming Audi Etchells Worlds in Fremantle, with a heavy weather win at the 2006 North American Championship.

Buzzards Bay! A South wind blowing' 20-25 with gust to 35 set the stage for the final day of racing in a series that was still up for grabs. Add in some rain and a six foot chop, and you had a very exciting and challenging day indeed.

As a precaution, the racing started early, at 9:30 AM, and the racing circle was moved to a more sheltered area off New Bedford's Ft. Taber. Despite these efforts, by the end of the day 12 boats experienced equipment failures. 'We had to have some boats towed in, but more importantly, there were no injuries', said Roy Tangen, the event Chairperson.

Reigning Etchells North American Champion, Jud Smith made it three in a row with a 2nd and a 1st in the last two races of the 2006 Etchells North American Championship.

Jud's crew, Henry Frazer and Mike Craig were also part of the 2005 North American Championship team. Jud will be competing in the 2006 Etchells World Championship to be held in Fremantle Australia this coming November.

South Dartmouth's Rob Hitchcock and crew were awarded the Corinthian Cup, donated by Pat Stadel, for the top finishing amateur skipper and crew. Rob finished an impressive sixth overall with his all New England team, (Ted Scott of South Dartmouth, Neal Fowler of Cape Cod and Nicole Jacques of Portland, ME.), sailing particularly well in the big wind today with a fourth and a third.

Canada’s Hank Lammens, Dirk Kneulman and Steve Girling finished second behind Jud, adding another outstanding New England performance to their first place finishes in the New England Championship and the Atlantic Coast Championship.

Marvin Beckmann, New Zealander Cam Appleton and 2005 World Champion Bill Mauk performed consistently throughout the regatta and finished third, fourth and fifth respectively.

The call from the crowd during the awards ceremony encouraged the New Bedford Yacht Club to submit a bid for the 2010 Etchells World Championship.

'This was a great regatta with a wide range of wind and conditions that tested everybody's abilities', said Bunny Wayt, the Executive Secretary for Etchells International Class Association.
