The weekend of 16/17 September saw three J105s participate in the JOG race to Poole and Back. Saturday’s race saw a good start by Voador (Simon Curwen) who had a crew of four, but the double-handed J-Dream (David & Kirsty Apthorp) was not going to allow them to lead all the way to Poole!
The fully crewed Just Aquaholix (Debbie Hall) tried hard to pass J-Dream who held them off to the end. Unfortunately the initial luffing match to pass Voador allowed many of the fleet to sail off and with a tight reach across Christchurch Bay the J105s were unable to make up enough lost ground.
Saturdays results saw J-Dream finish third on the water but fourth on handicap to three fully crewed boats.
The alarm call on Sunday morning was the foghorn of the ferries and the hoisting of the AP. Good news for the J105 fleet who had partied until the nightclub had closed and the wine had run out! Another brilliant start by Voador saw the whole fleet of 19 fully crewed boats and the two double-handed boats have some work to do.
J-Dream again set off in pursuit and after one hour overtook Voador. Just Aquaholix was in amongst the rest of the class to windward and J-Dream and Voador continued their race through Hurst Point and down the mainland side of the Western Solent regularly trading gybes. A reach to the finish saw J-Dream hold off Voador to beat them on the water by 32 seconds after nearly four hours of racing.
The J105 J-Dream has now proven that she can be competitive double-handed as well as fully crewed and has won the Double-Handed JOG Inshore Series for the second year in a row.
