Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup - Day 2

by YCCS Press Office on 6 Sep 2006
Velsheda YCCS -

The fleet of super yachts competing in the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup, organized by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, took to the waters off Porto Cervo this morning for the second of five days of racing scheduled for the event.

Once again blue skies and sunshine abounded but the wind gods failed to provide the hoped-for Sardinian Mistral and a light north to north-easterly breezes provided a challenge for the fleet of Maxis on today’s 30 mile course.

The Race Committee sent all the competing divisions northwards past the Monaci Island and on to round the small island of Barettinelli before turning south and leaving the islands of La Maddalena, Santo Stefano and Caprera to starboard. The fleet completed a final leg to PeveroBay before finishing just off the port of Porto Cervo.

The Spirit of Tradition boats were the first to start this morning accompanied by a breeze of approximately 5 knots. Hetairos (Cay. Isl.) won for the second day running in real time but dropped to second place on handicap behind C.E. Van Asbeck’s Annagine of the Netherlands and ahead of third-placed Adela (Usa) owned by George Lindemann, the largest boat in the fleet at 55 metres.

The Racing division boats took the second start and soon overtook the Spirit of Tradition boats to head up the entire fleet. As they rounded Barettinelli, roughly the half-way mark, Alfa Romeo (Nzl) held a narrow lead which she managed to then stretch as the boats behind her struggled with light air. Owner and helmsman Neville Crichton used the advantage to cross the finish line over nine minutes ahead of Wild Oats (Aus). Crichton retained his first place in corrected time, followed by Morning Glory (Ger) and Y3K (Ger).

The remaining divisions were forced to wait until the breeze picked up again before lining up. The Wally craft saw yesterday’s second-placed Magic Carpet Squared (UK) win in real and corrected time. Second and third place on handicap went to Tango (Ita) and Dark Shadow (Mon).

Almost all of the eleven boats competing in the Mini Maxi division were fairly tightly grouped throughout today’s race but the final results were almost a repeat of yesterday’s as Carlo Puri Negri’s Atalanta II (Ita) finished first in real time but dropped back to third on handicap. Giorgio Ruffo’s Aleph (Ita) took first place for the second day running and Flying Dragon (Ita) took second.

The Cruising Division saw Filippo Faruffini’s Roma (Ita) and coming in first in both real and corrected time while Arne Glimcher’s Ghost (Usa) once again suffered on handicap, dropping from second place to fifth. After time corrections the UK’s J-Class Velsheda came in second ahead of Allsmoke (Ger).

The overall leaders after two day’s racing and two races run for each division are: Annagine for the Spirit of Tradition division, Alfa Romeo for the Racing Division, Magic Carpet Squared for the Wallys, Aleph for the Mini Maxis and Roma in the Cruising Division.

Tomorrow’s forecast, provided by the event’s official meteorologist Filippo Petrucci, foresees similar conditions to today, with light north to north easterly breezes.

Owners and crews alike will be relaxing tonight at the Rolex Crew Party in Piazza Azzurra. Tomorrow will see the third day of racing before a scheduled layday for Thursday, racing will continue on Friday and Saturday with the Final Prizegiving scheduled for Saturday evening.

The Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup will be followed by the Rolex Swan Cup (11-17 September), which will close the YCCS 2006 sporting calendar. For more details on these regattas and all of the Club’s events please visit www.yccs.it
