Pirates at the National Maritime Museum

It’s up with the Jolly Roger, and let’s go….

It’ll be swashbuckling good fun at the Australian National Maritime Museum’s Pirates! adventure land that opens 14 September and extends through to 4 February next year.

Exploring the big Spanish galleon, kids will fire the cannon and, down in the captain’s cabin, have a spooky encounter with the pirate leader Blackbeard.
They’ll wander on Execution Dock (where a tarred body hangs grimly in a gibbet), and dive gamely through the open jaws of a long-bellied crocodile.
On hands and knees, young visitors will search for loot in the darkened pirate cave… and probably back away at the sound of ghostly warning voices.

And there will be games to play… one, for instance, where young adventurers pick up clues to plot their way around the pirate island, and another where they will learn a lot about real-life and make-believe pirates as they search for a hidden treasure.

Look out for the rollicking buccaneers!

The Pirates! island will explode with colourful entertainment every weekend and daily in school holidays.

Most of the time a mismatched duo of swaggering seafarers will roam around telling tall stories, swearing on their pirates’ oaths and keeping kids on their toes.

They’ll check credentials – like, can you speak parrot squawk? They’ll tell you if you’re worth your weight in gold – or jellybeans! If you don’t measure up, you’ll walk the plank.

And every weekend there will be a Pirate School where young buccaneers make their own pirate ships and puppets, or dress up as their favourite pirate pin-up…. and there’ll pirate movies at 2 pm every Saturday and Sunday.

In the spring school holidays (2 – 13 October) additional Pirates! entertainment will include a specially-scripted puppet show.

Entry to Pirates! will be free on weekdays during school terms. Admission at weekends and in school holidays, with live entertainment, will be $7 (adults and children) or $20 a family.

The Australian National Maritime Museum, at Darling Harbour, is open daily, 9.30 am to 5 pm. All inquiries, (02) 9298 3777
