Womens Eights 'B' Final - NZL wins

by Rob Bristow on 27 Aug 2006
NZL (far side) lead GBR (alongside them) to the Finish line Rob Bristow www.rowinginfo.info
After a false start, all crews got safely out of the blocks with GBR and NZL the first to show in the centre of the course - both crews went out to a half length lead.

There was nothing between NZL and GBR as the crews went through the 500 metre mark with both crews absolutely level.

Both crews were stroking at 37spm with NZL just moving up into the lead.

As they approached the 1000metres NZL had a half sec lead over GBR with two secs over RUS who moved up quickly on the leading crews.

NZL took their stroke rate up to 38spm over GBR at 1250 metre mark. The started a game of Rating Leap Frog, as first one crew would lift their rating and the other would meet and increase it

NZL raised their rate to 41spm and then to 44spm to fight off a hard charging GBR and RUS and win the B Final by the narrow margin of half a canvas.

The appeal of offshore
Is there still appeal? Have we made it too onerous? Why would someone take it up now? I had been pondering. Yes. Marquee events have no issue attracting entrants. Middle Sea, Transpac, Cape to Rio, Fastnet, and Hobart all spring to mind instantly, but what of the ‘lesser' races? Lots of boats in pens (slips) a lot of the time
