Classic final day show down at GUL RS200 Nationals

by Pete Vincent on 24 Aug 2006
RS200 UK Nationals 2006 RS200

The scene is now set for a classic final day at the Gul RS200 Nationals at Exe SC. After a very varied day 4 Roger/Katrina Gilbert are now just two points clear of Geoff Carveth/Fiona Clark. The Gilberts though are discarding a 48th and a seventh whilst the Carveth/Clark teams worst result is fifth so it really is game on. Third to fifth is covered by only two points so the Charles/Kingsnorth , Hewitsons and Greenland/Williams teams will be having a battle royal.

Race 7 started in ideal 14 knots from the southwest and everyone started early; all the leading boats were on the port lay line which became a major drag race. The Gilberts got the approach right and led but could not hold off Carveths pace downwind. The Gilberts slipped to fourth at the finish with Carveth winning from the Hewitsons and Charles/Kingsnorth.

As soon as the last boat finished the south Devon coastline disappeared under ‘orrible black clouds and the wind went total walk about. After a downpour and chasing the wind around the bay the wind settled in the north and PRO Phil Morrison set the 129 boat off in a patchy 6-10 knots. John Greenland/Pippa Williams were first out the gate and soon crossed the fleet in a text boat how to lead. The breeze then became very light and there were some major climbs and drops but Greenland/Williams just held their nerve to win from Carveth and the Derbys.

David and Jane Hivey from Budworth in the newest boat in the fleet lead the silver division from Robbie Burns and Vicki Simpson in the oldest boat in the fleet, the second 200 every built. James Boyce and Will Rogers now have a very healthy lead in the bronze division.

It is a grey morning at Exmouth today but there is a decent northwest blowing so the final day of the GUL RS200 Nationals will be exciting.
