Great Barrier Reef Yacht Club signifies benchmark

by Hamilton Island media release on 23 Aug 2006
Yacht Club Approach Hamilton Island www.hamiltonisland.com.au
The landscape of Hamilton Island is changing and next year’s Hamilton Island Race Week will most likely be staged around the magnificent new focal point of the island, the Great Barrier Reef Yacht Club.

The first stage of the Great Barrier Reef Yacht Club is due for completion in time for the 2007 Audi Hamilton Island Race Week.

The next stage will feature a range of elegant stand-alone villas, in five-star tropical surrounds, with a spectacular waterfront lagoon swimming pool and landscaped walking paths and is expected to be open from early 2008.

The unique yacht club design, which is a joint venture between Hamilton Island owners the Oatley family, and famed yachtsman Iain Murray is like none other in Australia. It features recreational and business facilities including a contemporary indoor/outdoor restaurant and bar which overlooks the marina, a private dining room, conference and function rooms overlooking Dent Passage and an inspiring central atrium space for events.

Other features, exclusively for members and villa owners, include a private health club incorporating a marina-front gymnasium, two saunas and a heated 25-metre indoor lap pool. There will also be a private cellar dining room and a conference auditorium.

Hamilton Island owner, Bob Oatley said the project is inspired by the rich colours of the Coral Sea, marine life and the soaring silhouette of full sails.

'Hamilton Island is a destination for holidaymakers as well as those who truly appreciate international boating excellence,' said Mr Oatley.

Hamilton Island Executive Chairman Sandy Oatley said the new Great Barrier Reef Yacht Club will become a flagship for the island.

'Its iconic design will be a focal point from the land and from the air and each of the luxury villas around the yacht club will offer a unique, distinctly Australian escape for either holidaymakers or owner-occupiers,' said Sandy.

'This development is a continuing sign of our commitment to Hamilton Island and to making it a resort that caters for everyone,' said Sandy.
