New Database for a Greener Bluer World

The more cruising sailors explore, the ‘greener’ they get. This truism comes from sad evidence for sailors to remote locations of the effects of pollution - man’s attack on the balance of nature to support an ever-growing world population.
If you are interested in your marine environment and want to do something positive about it, you can get many of the facts to support your story or guide your actions from a new online database.
IBI News reports that the UK's Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has announced the launch of an online database on the environmental effects of boating as part of its Green Blue initiative, an environmental awareness campaign created by the RYA in conjunction with the British Marine Federation (BMF).
The database, which can be found on the Green Blue website at http://www.thegreenblue.org.uk/sciencematters/scientificpapers_search.asp , brings together more than 550 scientific and regulatory papers that analyse the environmental impacts of boating. Searches can be made by subject, author, date or key word, and many of the papers are available for download.
'We are delighted to be publishing this important database,' says Anna Wyse, project manager of The Green Blue. 'It is the first time that people will be able to search all relevant environmental papers within one place, and we hope that this proves to of great use to all audiences — companies within the marine industry, regulators and planners and academics as well as anyone with an interest in boating and its environmental issues.'
Any organisation that knows of papers not currently included in the database are encouraged to submit them for inclusion by emailing info@thegreenblue.org.uk.
