Good start for Bethwaite in Yngling European Championship

by Event media/GJN on 26 Jul 2006
The battle for the European trophy in the Yngling got underway in good sailing conditions in Medemblik on the morning of 25 July. The first race was started on time with a Northeasterly breeze around eight knots.

The Australian team of Nicola Bethwaite, Karyn Gojnich and Angela Farrel are currently third.

The event started with a general recall and for the next start the committee hoisted the black flag. All 30 boats in the international Yngling fleet got away clean for the second start.

They were testing conditions for most of the competitors. It was one of those days were caution was needed. Avoiding too many risks in the oscillating breeze, finding the new wind, while working the favourite left hand side of the course, was on the menu. Ruslana Taran (UKR) won ahead of Monica Azon (ESP) and Annelies Thies (NED).

Second race was abandoned and later in the afternoon there was a restart and the race got underway in a building breeze from the Northeast. The French team of Anne Le Helley, Marion Deplanque and Catherine Lepesant were the first to start at the pin-end side of the line. With this start they gambled and won. They led the fleet from start to finish. Second was Nicola Bethwaite (AUS) and third Ulrike Schuemann (GER).

Over the course of the day the German team of Ulrike Schuemann, Runna Kapel and Ute Hoepfner got the best results with a fourth and a third place. The Dutch team of Annelies Thies, Annemieke Bes and Marije Kampen are second in the ranking with a 3rd and a 7th place.
