Cadet Worlds get off to slow start on day 1

by Event media/GJN on 26 Jul 2006
Very light wind for the first day of the International Cadet World Championship at Balantonfured, Hungary - the day began with a postponement on shore. Swimming, playing in the water, at all levels.

Then a nice breeze came around 11:00 hours. Out to water! Everyone launched in 15 minutes that is a quite fair time for 156 Cadets on three slipways. Thanks to the beachmaster Albert Wildeboer, who actually had his 63rd birthday. Albert is a phenomenon. Countries who are willing to organize really first class Cadet World Championships try always to get Albert as beachmaster. And when he can, he always comes willingly and happily. Without any doubt, he is the best in that matter (among many other matters). Happy birthday, Albert!

Races started for both fleets, then the wind began to weaken, but the race could be completed this time. At the end of the race, a storm appeared above the hills, so the rescue teams could try out how to get all the boats ashore as fast as possible. They succeeded in a brilliant time. Finally, only the borders of the storm reached the lake, but the colours were beautiful on Lake Balaton.

In the Worlds fleet, Francisco Cosentino and Samcho Castro of Argentina were first with Peter Lawrance and Liam Pardy (GBR) second, and Artur Ponieczynski and Michal Wakulinski (POL) third. Hamish Stone and Aaron Woolf (GBR) were fourth.

In the Promotional Regatta, Briton took the first three places. Amy Seabright and Katie Barr won from Joanna Freeman and Holly Francis, with Sebastian Balch and Emma Knott in third place. Mateusz Giemza and Pawel Glowicki of Poland were fourth.

The best ranked Hungarians got the 14th place in the Worlds fleet (Gergely Gond and Balázs Szellem), and 15th in the Promotional fleet (Gergõ Beck and Tamás Galgóczy).

In the evening, the team of Great Britain held a very nice presentation of the 2007 Worlds Championship.
